Laser Technology Upgrade Completed

posted Nov 12, 2015, 6:02 AM by Jen Weigel

From our guest blogger, Dr. Sweeney:

Dear Doctor,

TLC Charlottesville is excited to let you know that we have upgraded our current laser platform!  After careful evaluation of current and future technology in the US, along with pilot studies within TLC centers, we have decided to upgrade our excimer and femtosecond lasers to the Alcon Refractive Suite. The Alcon Refractive Suite consists of the WaveLight EX500 Excimer Laser and the WaveLight FS200 Femtosecond Laser. These important improvements in our technology offering will ensure TLC remains the leader in refractive surgery in North America.

Here are just a few of the benefits of the Alcon Refractive Suite for your patients...

·        Refractive outcomes for LASIK and PRK are equal or better than our current technology

·        Fastest Refractive Platform in United States
o   The WaveLight EX500 Excimer Laser has an average treatment time of 1.4 seconds per diopter.
o   The WaveLight FS200 Femtosecond Laser enables flap creation in approximately 6 seconds.
o   Fast treatment times allow for a more comfortable patient experience.
·         More custom treatments are available
o   Custom Wavefront Optimized treatments

o   Custom Topography Guided treatments – Coming in 2016!

·         Widest Treatment Capabilities
o   Wavefront Optimized – Up to -12D myopia with a -6D astigmatism and a +6D hyperopia with a +5D astigmatism, 6 diopters of mixed astigmatism. (clinical candidacy recommendations have not changed)
With this upgrade, we are happy to announce that there will be NO change in the cost of the procedure or co-management fees.

As always, we thank you for your continued support, and trusting TLC with your patients.

Change in Soft Contact Lens Protocol

posted Nov 11, 2015, 7:21 PM by Jen Weigel

We are changing the soft contact lens discontinuance protocol.  Basically, we are rolling things back to what things were like pre-Custom VISX days, so this is not as radical as what it might seem at first glance.

Previously, our contact lens protocol was:

- Soft spherical contact lenses:  discontinue 2 weeks prior to TLC pre-op/final scans
- Soft toric contact lenses:  discontinue 3 weeks prior to TLC pre-op/final scans
- Soft extended wear contact lenses:  discontinue 3 weeks prior to TLC pre-op/final scans
- RGP contact lenses:  discontinue approximately 1 month per decade of RGP wear; check scans/MR at TLC approximately monthly while discontinuing RGP wear; can transition to SCL during this time, but pt must ultimately discontinue those SCL according to the above schedule prior to TLC pre-op/final scans

Now, the new contact lens protocol will be:

- All soft contact lenses:  discontinue 1 week prior to TLC pre-op/final scans
- RGP contact lenses:  same as above, no changes

Important notes:

This will be easier on your patients, of course, but this was NOT the motivating factor for this change in protocol.  We have traditionally made use of two laser platforms - AMO VISX and Alcon WaveLight - but now that we are primarily using the Alcon WaveLight laser platform, we decided to change gradually to the contact lens protocols used in their studies that were submitted to the FDA.  In those studies, the contact lens discontinuance period was three days, and the results were excellent.  (Of note, three days is closer to what cl d/c period used to be pre-Custom days.  While I wasn't practicing then, I certainly have seen this protocol on paperwork when I've reviewed previous charts for records releases.)

Patients can see you at any time - no matter their cl discontinuance time - for their pre-LASIK/PRK vision checks, dilation, but they must discontinue cls according to the new contact lens protocol above before their TLC pre-op appointment.

And, it goes without saying, but this protocol does not replace professional judgement.  If your patient requires more time out of contact lenses, we will explain this to your patients at their consultation appointments.  Examples of cases needing extended cl discontinuance might include dry eyes, irregular scans, fluctuating MR.

Dr. Sweeney Earns Fellowship in American Academy of Optometry

posted Nov 11, 2015, 5:43 PM by Jen Weigel

At the recent meeting of the American Academy of Optometry in New Orleans, LA, Dr. Adam Sweeney was elected to Fellow of the Academy.

As part of his fellowship application process, Dr. Sweeney was required to submit written work in the form of published articles, case reports, poster presentations, or published book chapters.  Dr. Sweeney's previous work as a resident also contributed to his fellowship application process.  At the meeting, he defended his work to a panel of current Fellows, a process that I know to be nerve-wracking.

Dr. Sweeney is the second colleague that I have nominated for Fellowship!

Congratulations on your professional accomplishment, Dr. Sweeney!  - jw

Dr. Holzman Discusses PRK Management at TLC Charlottesville CE

posted Feb 23, 2013, 2:21 PM by Jen Weigel   [ updated Feb 23, 2013, 2:22 PM ]

From our guest blogger Nicole Lowry:

TLC Charlottesville kicked off our 2013 Continuing Education Series with a lecture from Dr. Andrew Holzman on surface ablation.  We were thrilled that most of our
Charlottesville Affiliates were able to make it to the lecture.  Since about 20% of all of Dr. Holzman’s cases are PRK, our Affiliates seemed to appreciate the refresher course!

Dr. Holzman discussed pre- and post-op care for PRK patients, and most importantly, the psychology behind treating PRK patients.  He also educated our Affiliates on which patients would be better candidates for PRK than for LASIK treatment.

Thank you to everyone that attended.  Keep an eye on OD Central for updates on our next CE Course!

TLC Joins VOA as Affiliate Member in 2013

posted Dec 2, 2012, 6:23 PM by Jen Weigel

TLC Tysons Corner, Charlottesville, and Richmond have joined the Virginia Optometric Association as 2013 Affiliate Members.  Affiliate Membership is open to any corporation that desires to connect with Virginia optometrists' premiere professional organization.  While membership is open to any corporation, only nineteen corporations are part of this elite group.  This will mark TLC's third year of participation in this program.

"TLC has been a corporate Affiliate since the VOA started the program," John Ball, TLC Richmond Center Manager, said.  "The main reason for us to be a corporate Affiliate is to again show our support for the VOA directly and to its affiliates indirectly."

In addition to the VOA Affiliate Membership program, Virginia TLC locations also provides support to the optometric community though continuing education programs, sponsorship of the VOA Fall Conference, and a commitment to the refractive surgery co-management model of practice.  - jw

TLC Committed to Optometric Co-Management

posted Nov 4, 2012, 4:44 PM by Jen Weigel

From the desk of George Neal, TLC CEO:

TLC Laser Eye Centers

Since my appointment in April as the CEO of TLC Laser Eye Centers, I've made it a point to spend time meeting many of the staff, surgeons and optometrists who together built this company into a refractive surgery leader. These more than 20 visits to the field showed a resilient and remarkably strong organization that is positioned for even more success in the coming years - a company that has turned the corner and is convincingly winning in the marketplace.

Market leaders are often the subject of rumors and speculation. Let me be clear: Optometric co-management was, is and will remain the foundation of our company. We are profitable and supported by a Board of Directors that is aggressively investing in an even brighter future. These investments have or will soon include additional advertising, the remodeling of older TLC centers, the continued purchasing of state-of-the-art LASIK technology, and an entirely new web site that more prominently highlights the important role optometrists play in a patient's LASIK experience at TLC.

These investments are not just focused on the U.S. In Canada, for example, we purchased a femtosecond cataract laser, and a TLC surgeon soon thereafter performed Canada's first femtosecond cataract procedure. We also started offering corneal crosslinking and will soon begin offering the KAMRA corneal inlay for patients with presbyopia.

These Canadian projects are important because they give us early and deep experience in the exciting new refractive technologies likely to be made available in the United States in a few more years. No other U.S. LASIK provider has this unique advantage, which puts TLC in a position to confidently continue offering your patients the very latest in refractive surgery.

TLC is proud of the life-changing business we've worked with you to build. We know of no other LASIK provider with the experience, expertise, technology and funding necessary to better serve the interests of you and your patientsThis market-leading position would not have been possible without the support of you and your optometric colleagues.

Now and in the future, we will remain focused on serving your patients with the best surgeons, the best results and the best overall patient experience. Our commitment to optometry is unwavering. This longstanding strategic focus on optometric co-management will not change under my leadership.

Thank you for your ongoing support of TLC Laser Eye Centers. Should you have any questions or comments that you want to share with me directly, please feel free to e-mail me, or call me at 636-534-2356.

Most sincerely,

George Neal

Can you find Dr. Holzman in this picture?

posted Oct 26, 2012, 9:45 AM by Jen Weigel

It might be hard to find Dr. Holzman in this picture, given all the camouflage, but I'm confident that you can do it!  : )

On a recent trip to Charlottesville along with PRC Nicole, Dr. Holzman spotted this unique truck and just had to take a picture with it.

Another good thing about the camo:  I bet you the truck never looks dirty!  - jw
