Who would have thought it would be possible to make a good first impression when you show up for a Center visit with grease on your dress shirt? Well, Dr. Grant managed to make that happen! I asked him to show up at 8:00 a.m. sharp (whereas most visitors come in later) so that he could observe a corneal crosslinking procedure. Not only did he show up on time (earlier than me ... hmm ... ok ... not that big of a feat), he also was a model citizen by helping his neighbor change a flat tire that morning!

The consultation appointments we saw together were not our average visits cut-and-dry cases. Most required a discussion of all refractive options - LASIK, PRK, ICL, and RLE - as well as a repeat of Pentacams after dry eye therapy, contact lens discontinuance, and avoidance of eye rubbing in the weeks to come before a final decision could be made. We usually try our best to make a firm recommendation on the type of procedure a patient should have on the first visit; however, in this case, we were only able to make a firm recommendation on plan of action that will lead to a procedure decision. I think patients can appreciate conservative planning just as much as they can appreciate quick decision making.

To top of the visit, a few days after Dr. Grant's visit, I was surprised to find his name on an article about corneal ectasia that I was reviewing. Turns out that Dr. Grant worked for several ophthamologists in California in between college and optometry school. He was able to do research there. Very interesting! - jw
