Dr. Jonathan Solomon discusses cataract refractive surgery

Thanks to Dr. Solomon for presenting such an informative lecture tonight about cataract refractive surgery. Despite the horrible traffic, we had a great turnout! Also in the audience was one of Dr. Solomon's ICL patients who went from being a -16 to spectacle-free after his procedure. It is quite something to hear a personal testimonial.

So, I learned a lot of cool things in this lecture:

1. While asteroid hylaosis is usually not visually significant, it becomes more so after a PVD, as might happen after cataract surgery. Exercise caution when advising these patients on premium IOLs.

2. Dr. Solomon carefully selects IOL materials in diabetic patients. Should they develop retinal changes later on that might require silicone oil repair, he does not want his IOL to interfere with the oil.

3. He uses the ORange wavefront aberrometer during intraocular surgery so that his refractive results are as accurate as possible.

and

4. Toric multifocal IOLs are currently used in Canada, but they are not yet approved in the US. It would be improper to smuggle one of these lenses over the border. : ) - jw
