LASIK 101 for New Affiliates

On Wednesday, September 9, 2015, TLC Tysons Corner hosted a LASIK 101 Night for new Affiliates to the area (and even some veteran Affiliates that hadn't been to the Center in a while).

I was especially delighted to see Dr. Poyesh Refahi at this event. Before she went to optometry school, she and I worked together at Associates in Eyecare's Stone Ridge office. Now that's she's graduated, she has returned to NOVA to practice optometry. Always great to see a familiar face, and this was a complete surprise to me since I didn't know that she was coming!

You would think that working in LASIK all the time then it would be hard for me to learn something new from these lectures. However, this time one point in particular stood out for me: The relationship between anxiety and pain. Of course, I had seen this in person myself many times where relaxed patients have essentially discomfort-free surgical and post-op experiences vs stressed out patients experience the same procedure but their experience is ... well ... not smooth. It was interesting to reflect further on the proportional relationship between psychological mood and physiological effect. - jw
